L’any 2014 dos amics es trobaven separats per milers de quilòmetres. El bateria Joan Casares residia a Barcelona, mentre que el trompetista Oriol Vallès cursava un any d’intercanvi a Holanda. Fruit de les ganes de retrobar-se i tornar a tocar plegats, es començà a gestar la idea d’Smack Dab, una banda on poder finalment tocar música pròpia i sincera.
La banda va donar-se a conèixer sent el projecte final d’aquests dos músics a l’Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, obtenint la Matrícula d’Honor per Recital de Fi de Grau (2015). També va ser guanyadora de las Ayudas Injuve para la Creación Joven 2015 del Ministeri d’Educació.
El primer disc del quintet serveix com a presentació del projecte. Surt a la venda el setembre del 2015. Enregistrat a la Nova Jazz Cava de Terrassa els dies 22 i 23 de juny del 2015, conté música 100% original. A més, la banda va comptar amb la col·laboració especial del saxofonista nord-americà Jesse Davis, que va gravar la meitat de les pistes de l’àlbum.
Després d’una temporada visquent junts a NYC ideen el seu proper disc. Amb la col·laboració de dos del músics en més demanda de Catalunya i la resta de l’Estat, Perico Sambeat i Toni Belenguer, formen un septet amb un repertori íntegrament original. També compten amb la participació del saxofonista i vocalista Hugo Astudillo, aka Escandaloso Xpósito. “SMACK 7 DAB” és llençat pel segell discogràfic internacional Fresh Sound New Talent l’estiu del 2017.
Pocs mesos més tard, el Jamboree Jazz Club de Barcelona els ofereix la possibilitat de fer el seu primer enregistrament en directe a una de les seves sales preferides. Aquest es publica el febrer de 2018 a la sèrie “Jamboree Live!” (La Cúpula) i torna a comprendre un repertori completament original.
In 2015, two friends were thousands of kilometers apart. The drummer Joan Casares was living in Barcelona, while the trumpet player Oriol Vallès was doing an exchange in Holland. Due to their desire to meet and play together again, the idea of Smack Dab started to develop. It should be a band to play original and sincere music.
The band gets their presentation in the final recital of those two musicians in the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, graduating with honors (2015). It was also awarded with the grant from Ayudas Injuve para la Creación Joven 2015 from the Ministry of Education.
The first album of the quintet is their introduction to the audiences. It was released in September, 2015 and recorded at the Nova Jazz Cava de Terrassa, on 22nd and 23rd of June, 2015. It contains 100% original music. Additionaly, the band enjoyed the collaboration of the american saxophonist Jesse Davis, who recorded half of the titles of this album.
After some months living together in NYC they project their next album. With the collaboration of Perico Sambeat and Toni Belenguer, two of the most in demand musicians from Catalunya and the rest of Spain, they form a septet to play exclusively original music. They are also joined by the MC and saxophone player Hugo Astudillo aka Escandaloso Xpósito. “SMACK 7 DAB” was released by the international record label Fresh Sound New Talent in Summer 2017.
A few months later, the Jamboree Jazz Club from Barcelona offers to maker their first live recording in one of their favorite venues. This gets released in February, 2018, in the series “Jamboree Live!” (La Cúpula) and features again completely original material.
